3 Marketing Tips for Web3 Growth

When it comes to marketing your project within the Web3 space, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the shiny new platforms promising to be the right fit for growing your community.

Regardless of the countless marketing options out there, one thing has proven to be true: Web2 tactics don’t always work for Web3.

With this territory being so new, it’s hard to know where to begin — but I’m here to help.

In this article, I’ll be breaking down the 3 most important tips for marketing and growing your Web3 community, starting today.

1. Focus on Community

Whether your community lives on Discord, Telegram, Twitter, or even an on-chain Web3 social graph like Lens or Fascaster/Warpcast, building a strong community should be the first step.

Without a dedicated, loyal community, most projects will fail.

Lots of people in the space yell out the importance of the word “community” all day, but it is important to distinguish what this actually means.

What is “community” in Web3?

I’ve found it all boils down to education and connection.

It’s easy to get so hung up on having a presence on every social media website. You may fall down the rabbit hole of blindly testing out every new protocol, joining every chat room, every Telegram group, and shilling in every server— but that isn’t the important part.

Sure, it’s good to familiarize yourself with the space, but it’s overwhelming and ineffective to be putting minimal effort into several platforms when you could be actively engaging with your core community on a few platforms.

It’s better to have a strong audience on a few specific platforms than radio silence and zero followers on every new and existing platform out there. Don’t spread yourself too thin, especially initially.

When in doubt, remember: Quality > Quantity.

But how can you build up a quality community?

There are 2 crucial steps to kickstart this process:

Provide value without asking for anything else in return.

Sharing relevant info with your community is a great way for you to do this. Provide information and resources about the space, provide tips to stay safe from hacks, and share your expertise openly.

Genuinely connect with your community.

There’s no way around this. You need to network within your community, make connections, make introductions, and continue providing value by providing time.

This can occur anywhere, from Discord to Telegram to the dozens of other options out there, but getting a core, dedicated community you’re personally connected to is important.

2. Prioritize Education

It is important to focus energy on education — of not only your community and new and existing users, but also the general public that may be unfamiliar with concepts surrounding Tech, Blockchain, Crypto, NFTs, and Web3.

It can be as simple as sharing relevant news articles and commenting on notable events in the space, or mocking up helpful guides for newbies.

Something that is often overlooked, but extremely beneficial is creating 2 types of content: one type for your Web3-native audience, and another type of content optimized for “Web3 newbies.”

While you may be sharing more niche and specific information within your existing Web3 and NFT communities on Telegram, Lens, Discord, or Twitter, there should also be information out there — especially educational information that’s tailored towards an audience that doesn’t know much about this space.

It’s nearly impossible to onboard new “Web2” users to Web3 when they can’t find this educational information in the first place.

This is where platforms like email newsletters, company websites, Instagram, Facebook, and blogs on places like Medium come into play.

It’s important to play the SEO game and meet people where they’re at with the information they need.

Someone that doesn’t know what a crypto wallet or an NFT is won’t stumble upon your project that only posts within nearly-hidden Discord servers.

Unless they happen to be hardcore gamers, they likely won’t even have Discord in the first place.

However, they might be doing some research into FinTech, wallets, NFTs, etc., and stumble upon some educational content from your brand on the web. Bingo!

These educational informational sources, in the form of articles, guides, newsletters, and other social media content can serve as a pipeline to educate outsiders and then onboard them to your community.

Education and community are truly intertwined, and should be treated with equal importance, which is especially true in Web3.

3. Hire A Web3-Native Marketing Agency

Imagine preparing for the launch of your new NFT project, practically dripping with utility, and then hiring an agency that has no idea what NFTs are. Or worse — they don’t even like dank memes.

While there are plenty of great agencies out there, a lot of times, traditional marketing agencies (or inexperienced, and overpriced “marketers” or “gurus”) enter the Web3 space and see the opportunity for a quick cash grab, often taking on projects without understanding how to market Web3 companies.

Seeing promising Web3 companies waste thousands of dollars on ineffective marketing breaks my heart. I noticed a huge gap in the space: we need more Web3-native digital marketers.

Seeing this opening in the market led to the creation of OctoView, and since then, we’ve been making impactful strides towards helping brands grow their presence in Web3.

In the last year alone, we have helped several NFT, crypto, tech, and Blockchain-based companies upgrade their social media strategy, create killer content, fire memes, and optimize themselves for Web3.
